Spring Update (14/04/04)
The Derwent Valley Heritage Way has now been open for a year. Since then it has proved very popular with walkers from near and far. A guidebook was published just before Christmas giving details of the route with maps (see previous newsletter). So, now that the better weather is here again why not have a look yourself? More information is in this web site and you can also get a certificate and badge when you complete it.
Plenty of people used the Way during the winter months. Ripley Running Club ran the whole way in 7 hours 52 minutes in February but had to wade the last bit as the river was in flood. See pictures below

Flooding is a risk at times, mainly in the lower reaches near the confluence with the River Trent. So, if you are going to that area in the winter months or when there has been heavy rain, it may be worth checking for flood warnings on the web site of the Environment Agency www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
Some new interpretation boards will start to appear in the coming weeks and the Trust is looking at how interpretation can be further improved. This will require additional funding so will take some time. The Trust is also looking to develop cycle access by making best use of existing tracks and roads as the opportunity arises.
