Work takes place #2 (17/07/02)

Project Officer (25/02/02)

The Trust now has a Project Officer to develop The Derwent Valley Heritage Way. Rick Jillings started in January and is working for the Trust for a year.

Rick normally works for Derbyshire County Council as a Countryside Ranger and has previous experience of developing and promoting footpaths in the County. He has spent the first few weeks familiarising himself with the route and the issues. A small sub group of the Board and Consultative Council have met with Rick and will advise and monitor progress.

At a meeting in mid-February, Rick had drawn the route on a series of maps. There were a couple of potential variants that were discussed but the major part of The Way can now be identified with existing Rights of Way. Rick is also starting to list the work that needs to be done on the stretches at the top end either for waymarking or for repairs to the path and structures along the way.

The Trust is pleased to record its congratulations for the successful bid for World Heritage status for the mills between Cromford and Derby. The Partnership that promoted the bid heard of their success just before Christmas. This was the culmination of many months of effort by many people and puts a part of the Derwent Valley firmly on the heritage map.

Watch out for more news of the Heritage Way in the coming year.

Good news at last! (04/10/01)

The funding is now in place to make a start on developing The Derwent Valley Heritage Way.  The sponsors listed below have provided the funds to enable the Trust to appoint a Project Officer.

It is hoped that this person will be in place before the start of 2002.  An advert will appear in local newspapers shortly and will be included in this web site.

The role of the Project Officer will be to:

  • negotiate with landowners and Local Authorities
  • complete the details of the footpath route
  • identify and arrange for the implementation of route improvements
  • organise signage and interpretation
  • look into the feasibility of a cycleway and bridleway
  • research opportunities for disabled access
  • help with publicity

Once the Project is under way there will be regular progress reports on this site.
